The default dentition on the Hard Tissue Chart (US) or Dental Chart (UK) is based on the patient's date of birth (DOB) when the record is first created.
Note: Any changes thereafter to the patient's hard tissue display must be made manually. See the procedure below.
- 0 - 6 years: Only primary teeth are displayed. For infants under the age of two, the number of primary teeth displayed is based on the patient's age in months.
-
6½ years to 11 years: Various states of mixed dentition are displayed after the first permanent tooth (25) erupts. The display is based on common exfoliation and eruption trends for primary and permanent teeth.
- 11 years and beyond: Only permanent teeth are displayed.
-
12 – 19 years: The chart displays additional molars and wisdom teeth based on what is common for the age range, such as 12 - 13 years, 14 - 18 years, or 19+ years.
How to Update the Patient's Dentition
You can update the dentition chart from primary to permanent, from missing to present, from present to missing, and so forth. The options available for each tooth vary by context.
To update a patient's dentition:
- From the Patient tab, select Clinical > Hard Tissue Chart/Dental Chart.
- For Mode, select Current.
- Select the Tooth Number. A status list is displayed for the selected tooth.
- Select the new status, such as Tooth Present, Partially Erupted, or Change to Permanent. The graphical display is updated and a clinical note is created.
Important: When primary and permanent dentition exist at the same location, resulting from over-retention of primary teeth or early eruption of permanent teeth, use the Mixed Dentition Present option. For Hyperdontia, use the Supernumerary Tooth Present option. For more information, see How to Chart Mixed Dentition, and How to Chart Supernumerary Teeth.
